Sometimes it’s hard to find the inspiration to write posts that aren’t entirely dribble. Today it was easy.
I read about Nayla Al-Khaja on Whitney Hess’ blog Pleasure and Pain this morning. She is an incredibly brave award winning film producer and director from Dubai. In fact she is the first producer and director in the United Arab Emirates. In order to get the education she wanted she had to travel to Canada for school. She could not travel alone as a woman so Nayla arranged her own marriage (and subsequent divorce) in order to travel to Canada to study film. She became a professional woman. As a result her brother and father have disowned her as a bad Muslim.
Ayla is telling stories about what she knows best, life as a Muslim in the UAE. According to Whtiney Hess, “Ayla’s next film is about how Arab women go on their first date. Dating is a taboo, done in secret. She’s (Ayla’s) 30 and has a 10:30 curfew. She can’t travel anywhere alone, basically she ran away to be here.”
Wow! What a story.

Martha, I have to say that I don’t even think I did Nayla justice in my tweets and subsequent blog post. I couldn’t possibly have captured her attitude, which was the most incredible thing about her. She was funny, self-deprecating, very Western in her behavior and demeanor and tone. The point I’m trying to make is that, despite the oppressiveness of her environment, she didn’t exhibit a shred of self-doubt, fear or apprehension in the way she addressed the audience. She was wearing what she calls her “European” clothes, but meanwhile I did an image search for her online and couldn’t find a single photo of her NOT wearing the abaya, I think it’s called. Couldn’t help but wonder how often she gets to dress this way. It was her first time in New York and she was there under duress, yet she was smiley, upbeat, hilarious. What an incredible human being.

Hi, Im Nayla’s Bro, not the one that had “disowned her as a bad Muslim”, no, im her little brother, and yes she is truly an amazing person and wonderful person she is my role model, i love her so so much, unfortuntely because my dad is angry at her right now for a reason i think is stupid, me and nayla are unable to see each other much often. I just wanted to say thank you very much, I cant wait untill I grow up and get a car so that I am able to go see her anytime I want and maybe work with her in movie productions/acting/directing, which I love. I am so proud of her and wish her all the best in her life.

Can I get the contact information of Nayla? I work for a magazine here in Dubai and we’re interested in an article about her.
Will appreciate a quick reply…
Thanks

Hi Suha,
I do not have her information, sorry. Perhaps Whitney Hess does?
