I logged into the ‘New’ facebook earlier this week, you can get there too http://www.new.facebook.com .   Call me a cynic if you will, but in my brief explorations I found nothing but frustration!  Yes the home page was ‘cleaner’ but then I had to waste a load of time looking around to find where everything else was.

 I had a look at it and decided that it is really nothing more than the old grocery store ploy.  You know the game I’m sure, wait until people can shop blindfolded then switch everything up.  It engages the customer longer, forces them to discover new products, and makes them generally grumpy.  We’ll see what happens when they go live with this.

Holy man!  It’s been weeks since I posted here.  I can’t believe it!

See what happens when you get having fun, ripping out carpet, laying flooring, painting, moving furniture and then putting it all back together.  We (H and I) put new flooring down in the upstairs, then had to paint and do trim work.  It was a HUGE job but worth it. 

Unfortunately, I came back to the blogging world infrequently, only really to do the paid work, and the volunteer stuff.  Things are really picking up for one volunteer project HH4H.ca and I’m lying to everyone if I say that I am not getting worried about things.  Everything.  Nothing.  It’s going to be huge.

The paid work is going well.  Not enough of it, as I dropped a client.  I guess it wasn’t a good match.  It is hard to be in the sticks here and rustle up part time work.  Contact me if you need someone to do writing/blogging for you. 

Oh well.  I can worry about that in the fall, after the joyous summer ends.

I was saddenned to read that Jason Calacanis ended his blog today.  He’s a great entrepreneur and thinker.  I love how he has marketed himself and everything he does so well.  Thanks for the ideas Jason.  I’ll keep your blog in mind as my inspiration.

So what are the odds that that there would be two bands IDENTICALLY named, and that I would mix them up?

Pretty funny really.  I was posting for the other blog I run … HH4H.ca .  I was talking about a featured band at our charity performance.  A Canadian Country Band called Haymaker but I accidentally linked to the other Canadian band called Haymaker. 

Hmm, oops, I laughed until I cried when a kind sole pointed that one out!  Have a listen, read the album titles, you’ll see the problem.

Boris has a wonderful post at The Next Web about Web 3.0 for dummies.  He has posted a super slideshow done by Freek Bijl that simplifies the concept of web 3.0 in an exceptionally clear manner. I really appreciated his finding this and putting it up in English.

I have been thinking about where the web is heading for the last few months.  Social networking has naturally evolved.  There is hardly any website now that doesn’t try and encourage ‘membership’ and communal contribution of opinions in the very least.

The most striking trend that I have remarked though, is the ‘opening’ of web sites.  Now I think it’s imporatant to make a distinction before I continue on.  Wikipedia, and Mahalo for example are ‘people powered’, harnessing the contributions of the masses to drive their content.  The new trend I am talking about is previously established sites like Google Map  allowing users to add/modify the existing databases.  This is a huge step in the direction of user driven content and it flows directly from social networking principals.

The next step will be for the re-thinking of what is proprietary data, and how can we open up the huge data banks of private corporations thereby enriching existing verticals for the benefit of users/consumers at large.

I feel like I haven’t been keeping up on my personal blog, focussing only on the paid ‘gigs’.  That’s true in part, but mostly I just haven’t had much to say!

The writing ‘well’ has run dry.  Inspiration just hasn’t been coming.  Maybe it’s the paint fumes from the ongoing projects I have going, maybe it’s the kids, maybe it’s just me.

I’m sure it’ll flow agian soon.  You’ll just have to indulge me with your patience until then.

Hello Wednesday nights on TSN!

I’ve discovered a whole new demographic that is using social networking sites for a primary means of communication. 

It’s the homeless.

As unlikely as this seems, they use public computers (in libraries etc.) to go online and to get in touch with one another.  No one knows you’re homeless online, and frankly it would appear to make perfect sense to have your virtual community know your where abouts, your status (are you safe) and to use the platforms such as FB to keep in touch with your family.

Not everyone who is homeless is homeless because their families don’t care.  Many choose the life of their own accord.  Perhaps for the wrong reasons.

My friends are lovely people, with a wonderful home.  Their daughter just wanted to live on the street.  The glamour  drugs and sex.  I saw her on a street corner today begging.  I stopped in at the bakery and bought her some food…talk about an akward conversation at a red light.

She keeps in touch with her mom on FB and posts regularly.  It’s sad, but effective.  I am glad for the public libraries, and for the internet.

It is not news to me, but somehow it catches the internet geek squads by surprise that 20% of the US population has not accessed the internet or email ever. According to the Parks Study Report nearly one third of the head of house hold had never used a computer to generate a document.

It’s a topic that I have been ‘hot’ on for the last year and a half.  Colleagues of mine in Europe were incredulous that interent access is an issue here.  I see it as one of the barriers to access for women, who in rural areas have even fewer resources to access the internet and enter the web 2.0 world.

It will take monumental efforts by government and industry to finish re-cabling North America and to get us all ‘up to speed’.

With the school year ending and summer approaching it appears this is the time when all my volunteer commitments pick up.  All of the last minute planning for the end of year events, the September welcome events, and the grant applications at the three schools where I sit on the parent council are falling into place.  Heather’s Hootenanny for Hope planning and organizing continues at a frenzied pace.  The puppy continues to grow and has now mastered several commands.  He is as cute as a button and has settled into our home nicely.  The kids are gearing up for year end trips and concerts.

I have been asked to apply for a local job at 20 hours a week.  I’ll have to make some careful considerations in the next couple of days about this.  It would be a pleasant job, 12 minutes walk from my house, Tuesday-Saturdays with 4 nights a week until 8 PM.  The hours are decent.  The pay is alright.  It boils down to the commitment factor. 

After having been a full time mom for 12 years, and having worked out of the home for 1.5 years on a free lance basis I have really come to value flexibility and freedom.  I can work at the cottage, at home, at the library.  On my own terms, when I like … I’ll have to think about it as I don’t want to commit to something only to decide it isn’t for me…

It is always difficult to decide what to do, to weigh the pros and cons of work/life balance.  The extra money would be nice but not significant, and would have tax implications for my husband which we would have to consider.  He also travels a lot for work, and that would make it more stressful all around when I had to work evenings or weekends.  Then there is the question of holidays (petty issue for some I am sure).  Shall I let a part time commitment interfere with family holidays based on the primary breadwinner’s schedule?

So many things to think about, and so little time.  I think I’ll have another cup of tea and head off for a walk in the rain.  Best thinking for me is often done when alone, walking in the rain in the woods.  It’s peaceful.
